Forum: Bob Brown: The Inconvenient Truth About Coal |
|
Bob Brown: The Inconvenient Truth About Coal What: Public Forum When: 3.30-5pm, Sunday 11 March 2007 Who: Speakers: Senator Bob Brown, a farmer, a miner and NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon. Chair: Greens candidate for Marrickville, Clr Fiona Byrne. Where: Marrickville Town Hall, 303 Marrickville Road, Marrickville
Greens Senator Bob Brown said: "Unless greenhouse gas emissions are drastically reduced in the next 10 years, we Australians will experience punishing change to our climate, our oceans and our capacity to produce food, and have secure supplies of water.
"Here is the inconvenient truth for politicians: Australia cannot address climate change without reducing its coal exports and emissions. Australia must kick the coal habit.
"The beauty of Australia's natural resources is that we can go from being a world loser with coal to a world leader with clean energy production in rapid time. The better we plan a transition towards renewable energy, the less disruptive it will be for the coal workers and the Australian economy.
Greens candidate for Marrickville, Councillor Fiona Byrne said: "Bob Brown will outline his plan for how we can build a renewable energy sector to enable a phasing out of the NSW coal industry.
"Sharing the stage will be a fifth generation farmer fighting to save his land from a proposed coal mine and a Hunter Valley miner whose experience has made him question the 'profit before everything' mentality of the industry.
"We're inviting residents to consider the powerful contradiction between Labor's bid to appear environmentally responsible while overseeing the biggest expansion of the coal industry in NSW's history.
